Program Notes

"Roncier Rose sur Treillis" à Novembre, à Paris for solo flute (1989)

In the memory of the Taiwanese Nan-Guan tune “Bramble Rose Trellis”, a commission by Pierre-Yves Artaud, the piece is composed based on his techniques, especially those derived from the oriental nuances.

The association with the ancient tune was also on the subtle changes on single notes, hence the variation on timbre as well as the recurrence of events with variations. Repetitions are put in the light of the ‘spiral’ changes.
The slow ancient musical time is brought up to ‘today’s’ vitality with the means of metric modulation process.

The 3rd section is slow reflection of the Nan- Guan tune, as well as pondering on the 2nd Presto section.
